Movie Monday 1/30

Another rough week here, living the ups and downs of the CFS rollercoaster life!

Jamie ended up home and crashed all last week again, but he finally went back to school this morning, after three weeks on the couch.  He still has very low stamina and energy, but it is good to see the spark back in his eyes.  And, today, Craig was home sick from school!  Hopefully, it is just a crash from doing too much this weekend, though he is still feeling awful tonight.  I wonder whether I will ever again experience a quiet day of solitude when I can get some work done!

Poor Jamie has no social life right now.  He's a 17-year old senior in high school, and instead of running around with his friends, he is hanging out in the family room with his parents.  But watching a good movie is a highlight for him right now, so we enjoyed a couple with him this weekend:
  • Craig had two friends sleep over Friday night, so Ken, Jamie, and I watched Abduction, starring Taylor Lautner of Twilight fame (or so I've heard).  It was an engaging thriller.  The main character, a high school student, discovers his own picture on a website for missing children during a research project for school.  He and his neighbor/classmate embark on a mission to uncover the truth about his background, but things quickly get dangerous, and they have to go on the run.  We all enjoyed this fast-paced action movie!
  • Saturday, Craig went to a movie birthday party (once again, he is the only one in the house with a social life!), so Ken, Jamie, and I watched The Debt, a spy thriller starring Helen Mirren.  Her character is a retired Mossad agent who, along with two colleagues, helped to track down a renowned Nazi war criminal back in the 60's.  They became famous for their success, but now, in the present day, history is finally catching up with them as they are forced to revisit their past.  This was an excellent movie, with a chilling, thought-provoking plot.
Have you seen any good movies lately?

The Debt sounds interesting..I like Helen Mirren. Joel and I watched One Day and it was horrible...really difficult to understand and just dark and ended sad...ugh!
So glad to hear Jamie could go back to school today. He has had such a tough tough time, Sue. I am so sorry. It is so sad when kids are so challenged by such nasty illnesses..and he has more than one!

Thanks, as always, for your kind thoughts, Renee. I am feeling especially down in the dumps tonight. Some days, it's just tough to keep pushing on through the same old stuff, you know?

On a lighter note, I'd heard One Day was pretty bad - thanks for the warning!

Glad to hear Jamie has made it up off the couch. Yay! Small victories. I think the winter is the worst for us. I get so sick of staring at the same walls. I long to be able to go sit in the yard again. Only a few more weeks. Soon.

I've been watching very girly stuff. A few that I've enjoyed are:
The Buccaneers: an English period piece about the various marriages of four young women.
In A Day: an English movie about relationships but not in the traditional sense. I'm not explaining it well but it is a good movie. Slow in bits but worth it.
Unhitched: a traditional romance movie
No Strings Attached: Somewhat predictable romance movie (a little bit graphic in parts) but good

don't you ever dislike movies Sue?

Sounds like fun - I don't get to watch girly stuff around here very often! Yes, we've had enough of winter, too - looks like both boys are down with yet another virus this morning.

Sure there are movies I dislike! But I rarely watch them. Just like with books, I choose my movies very carefully. I rarely rent or borrow a DVD from the library without first checking reviews on several favorite movie websites. I try to avoid anything with less than a 3-star rating. A few times in the past months, I did mention that I wasn't thrilled with all the action and superhero movies the rest of my family wanted to watch - but they were decent movies, just a bit violent for me!

If you are also interested in checking out movie reviews before you watch, here is a post I wrote about my favorite online movie sites:

Hi, Beatrice -

Welcome to my blog! Thanks for taking the time to comment and introduce yourself.

I have heard lots of good things about J. Edgar - will have to try that one one evening when the kids are out (they prefer action and suspense!).
