Weekly Inspiration: Books, TV, and Movies to Tickle Your Funny Bone

Hey, chronic illness spoonie friends! Earlier today, I was updating and sharing an older post of mine from 2019, Weekly Inspiration: Laugh!, when I realized it's been a long time since I've written a new Weekly Inspiration post and I could really use some laughs right now.

After feeling the best I have felt in years during the first six months of this year (not a single crash day!), getting COVID in July, and slowly crawling my way back from that over the next three months, I was doing pretty well by September and back to enjoying some camping trips with my husband. But for the past three weeks, I've had flu-like aches every day, which tells me my immune system is overreacting to something, most likely a flare-up of yeast overgrowth again. I've gone back to a super-strict diet with almost zero carbs to try to get control of it again, but between that and the state of the outside world, I'm feeling pretty discouraged.

The prescription? Laughter! As I explained in that older post, laughter has very real physical health benefits ... and it just makes you feel good! So check out the hilarious video clips and funny TV, movie, and book recommendations I made in that old post. And here are some more current recommendations for TV shows, movies, and books that will tickle your funny bone and make you LOL.

Funny TV Shows

My husband isn't big on straight-up comedies on TV (though my sons and I love to laugh over episodes of Bob's Burgers or The Office), but we both love to watch TV shows that combine a great sense of humor with drama or suspense. Here are some of our favorites, reviewed in the past two years (links to my reviews with trailers), that make us laugh out loud:

The Diplomat - It's the perfect time time to remind you of this outstanding show that has it all because it just returned for its second season on Netflix. It's got loads of suspense and international intrigue, but it's also so hilarious that we often had to pause and go back a bit because we were laughing so hard we missed a few lines! Great writing & acting.

Somebody Somewhere - This HBO Max show is so great that we watched all three seasons in record time. It's laugh-out-loud funny, but with great emotional depth and plenty of heart. Not for the easily offended--nothing is off-limits in this show!

Shrinking - Another wonderful show just back for its second season, on Apple TV. Starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford as therapists who work in the same office. It's another show that delves into deep issues like grief but with a great sense of humor. It shares some creative DNA with Ted Lasso, and it shows with the same blend of heartwarming drama and laugh-out-loud moments. If you didn't think Harrison Ford was funny, wait till you see him in this role!

Poker Face - This fun, twisty mystery series is built around its main character, played by Natasha Lyonne, so besides suspense, you also get plenty of clever wit. On Peacock - we're still waiting for season 2!

Funny Movies

Again, my husband isn't much for straight-up silly comedies (and honestly, neither am I), so our favorite movies that make us laugh always have other elements. Here are some we've enjoyed that were funny:

Hit Man - this 2024 Netflix movies defies categorization: it's kind of a romantic thriller comedy. It's based on a true story of a man who helped the police department by occasionally pretending to be a hit man, so they could arrest whoever hired him. Twisty, suspenseful, action-packed, and funny. Just a lot of fun!

American Fiction - Nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and with one of the highest ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, we loved this movie! It's very funny, but it's also poignant, heartwarming, and thoughtful. Highly recommended.

Flora and Son
- This heartwarming, funny movie about a mother and son connecting through music is uplifting and delightful. It will leave you smiling.

Funny Books

Apparently, I haven't been reading many funny books lately, based on my recent reviews. I love a book with a sense of humor, but my favorites are often books that will make me both laugh and cry ... and that's not really my purpose here. So, I'll include some recent reads but also some from a bit further back that are guaranteed to make you laugh. And definitely check out that old post because it did include some great books.

Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries, and Just One More Page Before Lights Out by Shannon Reed - In this funny, comforting, informative memoir, the author talks about her experiences reading and teaching literature in both high school and college. I was often nodding along or laughing out loud.

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt - This heartwarming story is about connections, loss, and family. It has great characters and an excellent sense of humor.

The Verifiers
by Jane Pek - This debut novel is a fun, suspenseful mystery with a great sense of humor. And book two, The Rivals, just came out!

What TV shows, movies, and books make YOU laugh?

I'd love to hear about them!

Two New Orthostatic Intolerance (OI) Resources to Help Patients & Doctors

Dr. Peter Rowe, MD, of Johns Hopkins is a renowned specialist in pediatric ME/CFS and Orthostatic Intolerance (OI) aka dysautonomia and is recognized as one of the most knowledgeable experts in the world. He directs a growing clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) program at Johns Hopkins Children's Center. This has expanded quite a bit from the days when it was just him, and he answered his own phone!

New Book

Dr. Rowe's General Information Brochure on Orthostatic Intolerance and Its Treatment has long been a go-to resource for patients around the globe - I've linked to it many, many times here in this blog!

That valuable information has now been expanded and updated into a book:

Living Well with Orthostatic Intolerance: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment by Dr. Peter Rowe

It is available from:

Johns Hopkins University Press, and

on Amazon

(all book proceeds help to support the clinic.)

New Webinar

Dr. Rowe has been conducting medical education webinars, to help train medical professionals in caring for children, teens, and young adults with ME/CFS. The series is called, Evidence-Based Pediatric ME/CFS Medical Education Webinar series. The first two webinars are available online (links to YouTube):

1 - Evidence-Based Pediatric ME/CFS

2 - Pediatric Orthostatic Intolerance: A Focus on Management

These webinars are SO important. What the ME/CFS patient community needs more than anything is for doctors to become better informed and educated. Even once ME/CFS becomes a standard part of the curriculum in medical schools (and we're a long way from that now), there are millions of medical professionals already in the field who don't understand or even recognize ME/CFS.

So, feel free to watch these videos yourself, but also, PLEASE, share these webinars with your doctors and other medical professionals.

A huge thank you to Dr. Rowe who has devoted his life to our patient community and has helped so many young people in his many decades of working in this often-ignored field.

30 Great Book Recommendations for Spoonies

I thought many of you would enjoy a books video I made this week, featuring 30 different books--all of which I've enjoyed--that were either written by a disabled author or feature a character with some sort of illness or disability. There is something here for everyone! The books I included cross all types and genres, fiction and nonfiction. There are even quite a few books by or about ME/CFS (including great, fun novels!). If you struggle to read these days because of your illness, I listened to many of these on audio, and there are lots of middle-grade and YA novels included here, too, which are often easier to read but are just as well-written as adult novels.

You can watch the video on YouTube or I will include it here:

This week was absolutely crazy for me. I usually try to keep my schedule light, alternating days with something out of the house with quiet recovery days at home. This week, I had something (mostly social engagements, which are tiring!) every single day, and two things on Tuesday. I took my elderly book buddy out for lunch, had a game night with friends (out in the evening!), went to a friend's mom's memorial service (during naptime!), attended my book group, and had massage therapy today. Whew. By now, on Friday evening, I'm pretty tired, but ... still not a single crash in 2024! That's mostly thanks to treating thyroid dysfunction (very common in ME/CFS) last year and switching to a very strict diet that finally got my chronic yeast overgrowth (also common in ME/CFS!) under control. I'm very grateful for all I am able to do now, though I'm ready for a quiet holiday weekend at home.

How was YOUR week?

Celebrate Mardi Gras at Home, the Easy Way!

It's Mardi Gras Day! We used to live in New Orleans, so this is a major holiday at our house, as you may have heard in my video, Celebrate Everything, Big and Small, which includes loads of tips for celebrating with minimal effort. We usually celebrate on Saturday and again on Tuesday. Before the pandemic, we had an annual party with all the food, music, etc. on Saturday. With my immune issues, it's now a small celebration with our oldest friends, who lived in New Orleans when we did. We enjoyed takeout from a favorite local New Orleans restaurant (a husband and wife team who were both chefs in New Orleans, under two of the top chefs there!), plus lots of shrimp. Today, Mardi Gras day, we will finish off the season with our annual tradition of Popeye's at that same friends' house (yes, Popeye's is authentic Louisiana food). And, of course, we've decorated for the occasion, and I'm wearing purple, green, and gold with my beads on!

Want to join the fun? Here is a collection of ways to celebrate Mardi Gras, New Orleans, and Louisiana today...including food, recipes, travel tips, movies & TV shows, and, of course, some great books! You can also check out my column in Shelf Awareness from last year that features books about and set in New Orleans, Armchair Travel: Destination New Orleans. And if you prefer a video, check out my Recommendations for Mardi Gras Reathathon: Books, Movies, and TV Shows.

Great Adult Books Set In/About Louisiana (additional titles in my article linked above):
  • The Crowning Glory of Calla Lily Ponder by Rebecca Wells, author of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood - I listened to Calla Lily's story on audio and laughed out loud & bawled my eyes out! It takes place in southern Louisiana, with plenty of local color.
  • Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table by Sara Roahen - I loved this memoir about the food, history, people, and unique culture of New Orleans.
  • Trail of Crumbs: Food, Love, and the Search for Home by Kim Sunée - although this food-focused memoir covers everyplace from Sweden to France to Korea, the author grew up in New Orleans, where the food culture impacted the rest of her life.
  • Burn by Nevada Barr - part of her Anna Pigeon series, about a National Park ranger, this one is set in the French Quarter (where there's a National Historic Park). I haven't read it yet, but I plan to this year!
  • Mardi Gras Mourning by Julie Smith - I first read this back in the 90's and am rereading it now for the Mardi Gras Readathon on Booktube. It's a classic detective novel, set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, so the setting and atmosphere are great!
  • The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate - outstanding historical fiction set in Loiuisiana, with a dual timeline in 1863 and 1987. It made my list of Top Ten Audios in 2023
  • The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett is another excellent dual timeline historical novel, about twin sisters born in Louisiana. One moves to New Orleans and the other twin decides to "pass" as white and lives a very different life.
  • Horse by Geraldine Brooks - in this historical novel from one of my favorite authors, some of the story takes place in 1800's Louisiana.
Middle-Grade and Teen/YA Books Set In/About Louisiana:
  • Ruined by Paula Morris - a teen/YA mystery/ghost story set in New Orleans (the perfect setting for a ghost story!)
  • The Freedom Maze by Delia Sherman - a compelling middle-grade historical fiction adventure (with a touch of time travel), where a girl from 1960 travels back to 1860 Louisiana
  • Zane and the Hurricane by Rodman Philbrick - a middle-grade novel about Hurricane Katrina - powerful and gripping
  • Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys - most people are familiar with her two YA novels set during WWII (Between Shades of Gray and Salt to the Sea), but this historical novel is set in New Orleans in 1950

Movies & TV Shows
  • Chef  - a wonderful, uplifting movie about a family food truck that travels from Miami to LA, with a stop in New Orleans, of course! My favorite movie of the year in 2015.
  • NCIS: New Orleans - though it's a crime show, it includes many scenes of New Orleans, mention of local restaurants and landmarks, and other local tidbits, plus some great local music. They usually do a Mardi Gras episode once a season, for extra fun. It's streaming on Paramount Plus (which used to be CBS All Access).
  • Treme - we LOVED this HBO show, which we were somehow able to watch on cable at one point. You can see it now streaming on HBO Max or Hulu.
  • You can also check out some classic movies and modern classics with New Orleans settings, like A Streetcar Named Desire and The Big Easy.
  • Or tune in to watch parades and other scenes in New Orleans streaming live (or if you missed the parades, some great videos) at www.mardigras.com.
One of the locals in Louisiana
Travel
All this talk of Louisiana making you want to visit? I have written articles about visiting New Orleans  and Exploring Cajun Country - check them out and start planning your trip (plenty of food recommendations in both!). I'm certainly ready to go back!

Crawfish!

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry!
Notice that many of the books and movies about Louisiana are focused on FOOD? Yes, Louisiana - and especially New Orleans - is known for its amazing, unique food. This blog post on how to celebrate Mardi Gras includes my own recipes for some classic Louisiana dishes, plus food you can grab locally today and webcams where you can vicariously experience Mardi Gras - there are plenty of suggestions in this post that you can still manage to do between now and Tuesday. Or save it for later if you like - we eat this food all year round.

NOTE that Zapp's potato chips - which you absolutely MUST try) have been bought out by PA-chip maker Utz, so you don't have to get them by mail-order anymore. We can now find them in local stores like Wawa here in Delaware or ordered on Amazon (Cajun Crawtator and Cajun Dill are the best flavors.)

Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Book on Sale for Black Friday!

I just wanted to let you know that my book is on sale, now through Cyber Monday, November 27. All e-book formats are on sale, and the paperback when bought through Amazon (sorry but I don't have control over pricing of the paperback through other online and in-store retailers but it is available everywhere).

About the book:

"Whether you are in the early days of living with chronic illness or have been at it for years (or decades), there are always challenges in living a life framed by limitations and restrictions, where isolation is a common issue. This guide provides inspiration, advice on emotional coping, and guidance on living your best life with chronic illness from someone who’s been there. Though it seems impossible at first, your life will eventually settle into a new normal, and while that life may be different than the one you had planned, it can still be a vibrant, fulfilling life based on strong relationships, a healthy emotional state, and finding joy in every day. The emphasis in this book is on LIVING your life, not just enduring it.

From Sue Jackson, the author of the popular and award-winning blog Live with ME/CFS, comes a book to help you live your best life with chronic illness. Based on Sue’s over 20 years living with chronic illnesses in her own family, writing her blog, writing articles on chronic illness, and leading multiple support groups, she provides support and practical advice you can use."

A few of the many 5-star reviews:

Loved ItThis book was eye opening and helpful. I am recently diagnosed with Lupus and struggling to understand it all. This book helped me to understand my life isn't over and I don't need to feel guilty when I can't do all the things. Instead I just need to change how we do things such as have movie nights etc.”

A Must Read for Those Struggling with Chronic Illness and Their Families - There is nothing more desperate than trying to find someone who “gets” it! Chronic Illness is real and the emotional toll it takes on the patient and family is tremendous. Looking for someone to help or at least understand is almost impossible. This book gives hope to those suffering from chronic illness by letting them know they are not alone, that there is help out there, and there are things to do to get you through those dark and scary times. There were very limited and often outdated books available to help my family during our initial struggle dealing with a child with a chronic illness. In the beginning life was a lonely and living hell. I was blessed to find Sue and a wonderful group of people online, who shared similar experiences and showed us how to survive in our new “normal”!”

Encouraging - Chronic illness is difficult to say the least. The daily challenges you face are often so debilitating. Suzan does a wonderful job sharing her and her family's challenges and triumphs living with chronic illness.  What a comfort to know there are people who understand and really "get" what you’re going through. Having support makes a world of difference when you are battling an illness and is essential in moving forward and living your best life.  I recommend this book if you have a chronic illness or if you know someone that does.”

"Must Read

I am only half way through and it has saved my life. Seriously.”

You can read more about the book and see more reviews, plus a list of links for finding the book (e-book and paperback) through all the major outlets and formats here.

If you're in the US, I hope you're enjoying the holiday weekend!

Excerpts from My Book on Living with Chronic Illness

I am home briefly in between trips - three trips in 10 days' time! It's a busy month with a lot of family stuff, so I thought I would share some videos here today.

Since I started my YouTube channel in February 2021, I have made quite a few videos based on chapters from my book, Finding a New Normal: Living Your Best Life with Chronic Illness (available everywhere, in print and e-book, and more info on the book at that link). This book is meant for anyone living with any kind of chronic medical condition, with a focus on emotional coping, daily living, healthy relationships, and figuring out what your best life is, within your own restrictions and limitations.

I recently made a couple of brief videos (YouTube Shorts, under 1 minute each), with a quote from the beginning of two chapters:

Who Do You Tell and What Do You Say? - all about deciding what to reveal and to whom about your medical condition.

The Hidden World of Invisible Suffering - how chronic illness showed me a hidden world with lots of people facing challenges others don't see.

And these are longer (12-25 min) videos, based on full chapters from my book:

Get Out! Nature Improves Health - based on the chapter, The Restorative Power of Nature, includes some photos and videos of nature, plus tips on how to enjoy and get the benefits of nature, no matter what your limitations.

A Plan B Day - a useful concept with specific steps to help you prioritize, reduce stress, and listen to your body.

You're Right Where You Need to Be - how techniques like acceptance, giving in, and living in the present can help you to live your best life with chronic illness.

Finding Joy in Every Day - simple habits that can help you to identify the small joys in your everyday life and create more of those moments, to improve your quality of life and happiness.

What Are You Looking Forward To?one simple tip I learned from a wonderful psychologist that can help when you are feeling stuck in a rut.

Celebrate Everything, Big and Small - when you celebrate the small stuff - with minimal effort! - you add joy to your life and give yourself and your family something to look forward to. It's fun!

So, I hope that will provide some useful information to you while I'm away.

What tips and strategies help YOU live with chronic illness?

Let me know in the comments below.
