We had a busy weekend, but we fit in a couple of movies:
- We watched Fantastic Mr. Fox with the kids Friday night. None of us had read the Roald Dahl book the movie is based on, but it clearly showed off the author's usual clever wit. George Clooney is the voice of Mr. Fox, and Meryl Streep is the voice of Mrs. Fox in this sort of folk tale starring animals in human-like roles with an old-fashioned kind of stop-action animation. Clever, funny, and very amusing.
- Saturday, while the boys were at a high school football game, Ken and I watched The Notorious Bettie Page, based on the real life of a young woman from Nashville who became known as The Pin-Up Queen of the Universe. The movie is as much about the pop culture and mores of the 1950's as it is about Bettie herself. The fascinating irony of this story is that Bettie was actually a very sweet, naive, and religious woman who found herself at the center of an indecency scandal. We enjoyed it.

Oo, that sounds like something I'd like. How did you find that movie (Bettie, not Mr. Fox, lol)? I love that you find not just the usual fare but the harder to find stuff, too.
Happy birthday to Ken!
Thanks, Shelli - I think we saw a preview of this one on another DVD - it was produced by HBO. I keep a mini notebook on the coffee table so I can jot down possible movies when we see previews!

I loved the Fantastic Mr. Fox and I generally don't like animated movies (I must be the only person alive who got bored during Up!). I'm going to look up The Notorious Bettie Page and Netflix. Looks good to me.
And, happy birthday to Ken!
Happy birthday Ken. Love the photo! I can't wait until my kids are old enough for Fantastic Mr Fox - I've heard great things about it - but I think it's a little advanced for 5 and 3, no?
Peryl -
yeah, 5 and 3 are probably a bit young. I don't think there's anything too objectionable, but they wouldn't get most of the humor.

Sounds like a great time, I'm glad you were able to enjoy yourself and celebrate!
Happy B-day to Ken. Don't you just love those photos from YEARS ago? I have a few of hubby that I pull out on birthdays. I have, however, cleverly hidden all those photos of me from way back when. Now that our kids are 30-ish I have photos of them from "way back" that I use for blackmail! LOL
